PLENARY SESSION
Generative AI Systems: GPT for the Future of YOUR work
Led by: Prof Elliott Ash (ETH Zurich)
Session Abstract
Learn more about the potential and problems of AI assistants in "GPT for the Future of YOUR Work 2.0," the sequel to last year's workshop on the topic. Prof. Ash will offer a quick but deep introduction to the use of Generative AI in diverse work tasks: writing/editing, brainstorming, summarization, marketing, data analysis, coding, and fun. That includes some of the new developments and trajectories since last year. Regardless of your work domain, we will demo tools that can help with some tasks. We will also review the limitations, risks, and open questions about the integration of AI into work.
SIMULTANEOUS SESSIONS (CLOSED DOOR SESSIONS)
Note: The below discussions are all closed-door sessions. Attendance is by invitation only to ensure focused and candid discussions among key stakeholders.
Session I - Sovereign AI: Designing Policy for Future Societies
Led by: Prof. David Shrier (Imperial College UK)
Featured inputs from:
Katharina Frey (Swiss Foreign Ministry)
Alexander E. Bruner (Author, Swiss AI)
Session Abstract
This exclusive, closed-door workshop organised by the Trusted AI Alliance at Imperial assembles diverse perspectives to inform a discussion around how nation-states and multinational organisations can develop policies to support Sovereign AI systems, which are AI capabilities independent of Big Tech AI.
Sovereign AI initiatives already are under way in domiciles (or regional authorities within countries) including Switzerland, Singapore, Japan, Germany, France, the UK, KSA, UAE, India and elsewhere.
Countries must balance other national priorities against Sovereign AI's significant financial and technological investment requirements. Options for nation-states, supranational federals (e.g., EU) and international alliances (e.g., ASEAN) include building end-to-end sovereign AI, collaborating regionally, and leveraging open-source initiatives.
Participants will engage in a hands-on, salon-style discussion around considerations relevant to designing and implementing Sovereign AI policy in the context of National AI Policy initiatives.
Through collaborative activities, attendees will:
- Understand key principles of new Sovereign AI frameworks
- Assess the implications of Sovereign AI against the backdrop of national policies on AI, data privacy and digital
- Debate alternate approaches to development and deployment
- Highlight select risks and how to mitigate them, including hazards and opportunities when Big Tech participates in Sovereign AI
- Interrogate how public-private interactions can accelerate Sovereign AI, and identify key ecosystem participants needed to encourage adoption and scaling
- Describe enabling interventions that can support successful implementation
This invitation-only session offers a unique opportunity for AI developers, policymakers, think tank representatives, and industry experts to contribute their insights to a global framework that is being proposed on Sovereign AI.
Help us refine the future-facing frameworks that are deploying globally around Sovereign AI.
Session II - AI Value Chain Workshop: Fostering Responsible Innovation in Open-Source AI
Led by: Laura Galindo-Romero (Meta)
Session Abstract
This exclusive, closed-door workshop organised by Open Loop at the ETH AI Summit 2024 brings together a select group of AI stakeholders to explore the intricate dynamics of the AI value chain in the context of open-source foundation models.
Participants will engage in an interactive, scenario-based exercise that examines the roles, responsibilities, and potential collaborations among various actors in the AI ecosystem. Through collaborative activities, attendees will:
- Analyze the interconnections and responsibilities across the AI value chain
- Explore practical approaches to responsibility and accountability in open-source AI
- Develop strategies for effective AI governance that balance innovation with ethical considerations
- Foster cross-sector collaborations to address emerging challenges in AI development and deployment
This invitation-only session offers a unique opportunity for AI developers, policymakers, think tank representatives, and industry experts to contribute their insights to the cutting-edge discourse on AI governance. Participants will gain valuable perspectives on navigating open-source AI contexts, while helping to shape future frameworks for responsible AI innovation.
Join us for this thought-provoking workshop and be part of the conversation and influence the future of AI governance.
Session III - Play & Learn – How Sandboxes Can Shape the Future of AI
Led by: Raphael von Thiessen (Canton of Zurich)
Featured inputs from:
Fabio Sefery (University of Florence, Italy)
Session Abstract
This exclusive, closed-door round table is organised by the Canton of Zurich.
As AI evolves faster than regulations, new approaches to regulatory learning become essential. This roundtable explores how AI sandboxes provide a flexible environment for testing and innovation.
With the EU AI Act mandating the launch of regulatory sandboxes in many countries, we’ll showcase Zurich’s successful experience with an innovation sandbox over the past three years, including the completion of five AI projects.
We’ll also share insights from the first AI Sandbox Summit, which brought together seven European countries.
Join us to discuss different sandbox designs and their potential to shape the future of AI policy.
